Gallery Opening at Tiffany Peay Jewelry
Showing the paintings of Martha Taradash
Tiffany Peay Jewelry is pleased have local artist Martha Mullen Taradash share her work with us beginning with an artist’s reception May 23, 2008 from 5-7pm. The gallery is located on the second floor of 3879 Main Road in Tiverton 4 Corners. Martha’s work will be shown throughout the summer.
Born in January, it is only appropriate that Martha’s birthstone is a garnet; this beautiful burgundy gemstone is the symbol of passion with which Martha has had throughout her life in every endeavor. She is best known around town for her horses. A lucky few have been privy to another life-long passion: her painting. Martha has been painting in oils since she was a teenager in Burlington, Vermont. Inspired by the woods around her, she began painting landscapes of the mountains - her first work en plein air! Martha went on to receive her undergraduate training at Verper George School of Art in Boston in 1973. When working as a commercial artist did not suit her, she chose to work as the activities director for Kimwell Nursing Homes in Fall River for ten years. During the 1970’s, she continued painting on the side, studying with Hernan Ishkowitz in Providence.
In the 1980’s, Martha put her main effort into raising five children, while pursuing a second degree at Swain School of Art in New Bedford. Her professors encouraged her to take inspiration from her environment, from which a series of childhood portraits was born, including the boys in the sandbox, reading in bed as well as the trio on the beach.
In the summer of 2002, Martha first discovered Monhegan Island in Maine. She fell in love with its ragged coast-line and drew inspiration from artistic peers such as Kevin Beers, Don Stone, Ted Tahansky, Alison Hill and Jamie Wyeth, as well as other artists who had fallen in love with the island in the past such as Winslow Hommer, Rockwell Kent and Abraham J. Bogdanove. Since then, Martha has returned each year from Monhegan with boxes full of completed plein-air paintings and is looking forward to her next trip to Maine in September. She lives in Tiverton with her husband, Bernie and their menagerie of animals.
